This issue of The GPM Monitor is particularly timely, as the Project has a great deal of exciting news to report to the GPM community. GPM recently completed its first major procurement action with the selection of a vendor to design and fabricate the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) that will fly on both the Core Spacecraft and NASA’s Constellation Spacecraft.

GPM staff members are also working with personnel from GSFC’s Rapid Spacecraft Development Office (RSDO) to finalize the Request For Offer (RFO) for GPM Study 2, in which vendors will be required formulate the preliminary spacecraft design for the GPM Core Spacecraft. Along with the GMI procurement, these activities constitute great strides toward development of the GPM Core Spacecraft.

We also have news regarding the development of GPM’s Ground Validation Segment (GVS). The peer-reviewed team tasked with studying the feasibility of certain GVS concepts is scheduled to report its findings in August 2005. The results of these feasibility studies are expected to contribute significantly to the design of the GVS. In addition, preparations are underway for the Second GPM Ground Validation Workshop, which will take place this Fall in Taipei, Taiwan. During this meeting, participants will work together to further define requirements and plans for the Ground Validation Site System.

This issue of The Monitor contains articles on each of these important GPM developments. As you peruse the newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact the authors of the articles or me for further details.

In conclusion, as I mentioned in the last issue of the newsletter, the GPM Project has experienced several personnel changes during the past year. Below is a chart depicting the current GPM organization. We have a talented team in place and I look forward to working with the entire group to achieve GPM goals.
