Since the last issue of The Monitor, the project team
has been very busy refining the top level mission science requirements
(which we hope will be ready for publication in the summer edition
of the newsletter), developing the hybrid concept for the Core Spacecraft
(see article), working with JAXA to define
the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) interface requirements,
and managing the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) development. This bevy
of activity is focused on leading us to a successful GMI Preliminary
Design Review (PDR) in November 2006, DPR PDR by January 2007, and
Core Spacecraft PDR the following February.
With these key milestones fast approaching, it has become time
to shed the qualifying title of "Formulation" from the
project management structure. As such, the project will replace
the Project Formulation Manager position at the top of its organization
chart with Project Manager and Deputy Project Manager positions.
Accompanying these organizational changes are personnel changes,
as well. I have accepted the position of Deputy Project Manager/Technical
on the James Webb Space Telescope Project, while Mr. Art Azarbarzin
has assumed the mantle of GPM Project Manager and Ms. Candace Carlisle
has assumed the role of Deputy Project Manager. (Click here to read
Mr. Azarbarzin’s message to the GPM community or view
a brief introduction to Ms. Carlisle.) These changes went into
effect on May 22, 2006.
I have spent approximately five pleasurable years in management
of the GPM Project, and leave it in the hands of a very strong team
and on very solid footing for a successful development effort. I
will miss working with this exceedingly fine team on a day-to-day
basis, but have forged friendships that transcend the project boundaries.
I will track the progress of GPM from the outside, as a party interested
in the success of the mission. I wish the GPM community the best
of luck in bringing GPM to fruition.
Best Regards,
